Question 1 — Easy
A square has 4 sides. A hexagon has 6 sides. How many sides does a PENTAGON have?
Answer: A pentagon has 5 sides — 'penta' means five in Greek. Option A (4) is the number of sides of a square. Option B (6) is the number of sides of a hexagon. Option D (8) is the number of sides of an octagon.
Question 2 — Medium
Priya has a collection of shapes. She counts all the sides on one triangle and all the sides on one octagon, then adds the totals together. How many sides does she count altogether?
Answer: A triangle has 3 sides and an octagon has 8 sides; 3 + 8 = 11, so the correct answer is 11. Option B (9) is a common error from adding 3 + 6, confusing an octagon with a hexagon. Option C (10) may result from counting a triangle as 4 sides or an octagon as 6. Option D (12) may come from doubling or miscounting both shapes.
Question 3 — Hard
A student sorts a group of shapes into two groups. Group 1 has shapes with fewer than 5 sides. Group 2 has shapes with 5 or more sides. Which group would contain a triangle AND an octagon?
Answer: A triangle has 3 sides, which is fewer than 5, so it belongs in Group 1. An octagon has 8 sides, which is 5 or more, so it belongs in Group 2. Distractors B and C place both shapes in the same group, and D reverses the correct placement of each shape.
