NSW Year 3 students sit their first NAPLAN in March. The numeracy test covers counting, addition, subtraction, early multiplication, fractions, measurement and shapes. In NSW, NAPLAN results are used by selective high schools as part of their admissions process — making early preparation particularly important. Skillo has hundreds of practice questions, free and ready to go.

Question 1Easy

A table shows animals at the circus: Lions = 3, Horses = 5, Elephants = 2. How many animals are there IN TOTAL?

A) 10
B) 8
C) 12
D) 15

Answer: 3 + 5 + 2 = 10 animals. Add step by step: 3 + 5 = 8, then 8 + 2 = 10. Option B (8) adds only lions and horses (3 + 5) — misses elephants. Option C (12) may use 3 + 5 + 4 — wrong elephant count. Option D (15) adds 3 + 5 + 7.

Question 2Medium

On Saturday the bakery sells 247 items. On Sunday it sells 318 items. How many items are sold over the whole weekend?

A) 555
B) 545
C) 575
D) 565

Answer: 247 + 318 = 565. Ones: 7 + 8 = 15 (write 5, carry 1). Tens: 4 + 1 + 1 = 6. Hundreds: 2 + 3 = 5. Total: 565. Option A (555) has an error in the tens column. Options B and C make similar addition errors.

Question 3Hard

There are 48 cupcakes on the tray. The class eats 23 of them. How many cupcakes are LEFT?

A) 71
B) 25
C) 21
D) 30

Answer: 48 − 23 = 25. Count back: 48 − 20 = 28, then 28 − 3 = 25. Option A (71) adds instead of subtracts: 48 + 23 = 71. Option C (21) subtracts incorrectly: perhaps 48 − 27 = 21 or a carrying error. Option D (30) rounds 23 up to 20 and subtracts: 48 − 20 = 28, close but wrong.
