The diver saw a massive whale shark near the reef. Which word is the best SYNONYM for 'massive'?

A) microscopic
B) enormous
C) moderate
D) gentle

Answer: A synonym is a word with the same or very similar meaning. 'Enormous' means very large — it is the best synonym for 'massive'. Option A ('microscopic') means extremely small — the opposite. Option C ('moderate') means medium-sized — not large enough. Option D ('gentle') describes manner or behaviour, not size.

Question 2Medium

C) The platypus (a unique Australian animal lays eggs.

Answer: Brackets are used to enclose extra information that is added to a sentence without changing its main meaning. In option A, the brackets correctly surround the phrase 'a unique Australian animal', which adds extra detail about the platypus.

Which word is an adverb of manner? The students listened ___ while the author read aloud from her new book.

A) attentively

Answer: An adverb of manner tells us how an action is done. 'Attentively' describes how the students listened, which makes it an adverb of manner. 'Nearby' is an adverb of place (where something is). 'Soon' is an adverb of time (when something happens). 'Upstairs' is also an adverb of place.
