Question 1 — Easy
Zac collects 243 shells at the beach. He finds 135 more shells. How many shells does he have altogether?
Answer: 243 + 135 = 378, so Zac has 378 shells altogether. Option A (368) results from incorrectly adding the ones digits (3 + 5 = 8, but writing 6 instead). Option C (108) is the result of subtracting instead of adding. Option D (388) results from adding an extra 10 in the tens column.
Question 2 — Medium
Zac collected 324 cans for a food drive. Mia collected 153 cans. How many cans did they collect altogether?
Answer: Adding 324 and 153 gives 477. Adding the ones: 4 + 3 = 7, the tens: 2 + 5 = 7, and the hundreds: 3 + 1 = 4, giving 477. Option A results from an error in the ones column, C from an error in the tens column, and D from adding an extra ten.
Question 3 — Hard
A theme park sold 400 tickets in one day. 25% were family passes. How many family passes were sold?
Answer: 25% of 400 = 400 ÷ 4 = 100. Since 25% = ¼, divide by 4: 400 ÷ 4 = 100. Option A (25) uses the percentage directly as the answer. Option B (75) calculates 75% of 100. Option D (80) uses 20% of 400.
