Question 1Easy

Which word follows the same -ear spelling pattern as 'hear', where the letters -ear make the /ɪə/ sound?

A) learn
B) bear
C) near
D) heart

Answer: The word 'near' uses the -ear pattern and pronounces it /ɪə/, the same as 'hear'. The words 'learn', 'bear', and 'heart' all use the -ear letter pattern but pronounce it differently — /ɜː/ in 'learn', /ɛə/ in 'bear', and /ɑː/ in 'heart'. This question tests that the same letter pattern -ear can have different pronunciations.

Question 2Medium

Choose the correctly spelled word to complete the sentence: The detective found a clear _____ on the glass of the back door.

A) fingerrprint
B) fingarprint
C) fingerprint
D) fingurprint

Answer: The correct spelling is 'fingerprint' — FIN-ger-print. Three syllables. A compound word: 'finger' + 'print'. Option A ('fingerrprint') doubles the 'r'. Option B ('fingarprint') changes 'e' to 'a' in 'finger'. Option D ('fingurprint') changes 'e' to 'u' in 'finger'.

Question 3Hard

The young cook was ___ for the feedback her mentor gave about improving her soufflé. Which spelling is correct?

A) greatful
B) greaful
C) gratefull
D) grateful

Answer: 'Grateful' is the correct spelling. It comes from 'grate' (feeling moved, as in 'ingrate') + '-ful': grate-ful. Option A ('greatful') is the most common error — students write 'great' instead of 'grate'. Option B ('greaful') drops the 't'. Option C ('gratefull') doubles the 'l' at the end.
