Question 1 — Easy
A community pool opens at 7:40 am. What is this time expressed in 24-hour time?
Answer: Times before noon in 24-hour format are written using four digits, so 7:40 am becomes 0740. Option B (1940) is incorrect because adding 12 hours is only done for pm times, not am times. Option C (7:40) is simply the 12-hour format and not a valid 24-hour time. Option D (0040) incorrectly subtracts hours rather than correctly writing the am time with a leading zero.
Question 2 — Medium
A train departs Sydney at 7:48 am and arrives in Newcastle at 10:15 am. A bus for the same journey takes 1 hour and 50 minutes longer than the train. How long does the bus journey take?
Answer: The train journey is 2 hours 27 minutes. Adding 1 hour 50 minutes gives 4 hours 17 minutes for the bus.
Question 3 — Hard
What is 3:45 pm expressed in 24-hour time?
Answer: To convert a pm time to 24-hour time, add 12 to the hours: 3 + 12 = 15, giving 15:45. Option B (13:45) incorrectly adds 10 instead of 12. Option C (3:45) simply removes the 'pm' label without converting. Option D (16:45) incorrectly adds 13 instead of 12.
