Question 1Easy

The temperature in Melbourne dropped from 19°C at noon to −3°C at midnight. By how many degrees did the temperature fall?

A) 16°C
B) 22°C
C) 21°C
D) 17°C

Answer: Temperature fall = 19 − (−3) = 19 + 3 = 22°C.

Question 2Medium

A mining shaft has two levels. Level 1 is at −35 m and Level 2 is at −98 m. A worker travels from Level 2 up to Level 1, then continues upward to the surface (0 m). What is the total distance the worker travels?

A) 98 m
B) 133 m
C) 63 m
D) −133 m

Answer: From Level 2 (−98 m) to Level 1 (−35 m) is −35 − (−98) = 63 m, and from Level 1 (−35 m) to the surface (0 m) is 0 − (−35) = 35 m, giving a total of 63 + 35 = 133 m. Option A (98 m) is the error of only calculating the depth of Level 2 without considering the two-stage journey. Option C (63 m) only accounts for the first leg of the journey. Option D (−133 m) incorrectly applies a negative sign to a distance, confusing displacement with distance.

Question 3Hard

A drone is flying at an altitude of 85 m above ground. It then descends 120 m. Which of the following correctly describes the drone's new position, and what calculation supports it?

A) 35 m below ground, because 85 − 120 = −35
B) 35 m above ground, because 120 − 85 = 35
C) 205 m below ground, because −85 − 120 = −205
D) 35 m below ground, because −85 + 120 = 35

Answer: Starting at +85 m and descending 120 m gives 85 − 120 = −35, meaning 35 m below ground level; option A is correct. Option B finds the difference between 120 and 85 without considering direction, giving a positive result that ignores the drone going below ground. Option C incorrectly treats the starting position as negative (−85) then subtracts a further 120. Option D uses the correct magnitude but reverses the signs, effectively calculating a rise from −85 rather than a descent from +85.
