Question 1 — Easy
Tom scored 8.9 points in a school maths competition. Which score is between 8.9 and 9.0?
Answer: 8.95 is greater than 8.9 and less than 9.0, so it sits between the two values. 8.19 and 8.09 are both less than 8.9, and 9.01 is greater than 9.0.
Question 2 — Medium
What is 25% of 80?
Answer: 25% means 25 out of 100, or one quarter, so 25% of 80 = 80 ÷ 4 = 20. Option B confuses the percentage itself (25) with the answer. Option C is 50% of 80 (half rather than a quarter). Option D results from incorrectly dividing 80 by 25 without considering what percentage means.
Question 3 — Hard
The temperature in Darwin was recorded at 6-hour intervals over one day: 24°C at midnight, 22°C at 6 am, 33°C at noon, 38°C at 6 pm, and 29°C at midnight. What was the range of temperatures recorded?
Answer: Range = maximum − minimum = 38°C − 22°C = 16°C.
