Question 1 — Easy
A scuba diver is at a depth of -12 metres. She swims up 7 metres. What integer shows her new depth?
Answer: -12 + 7 = -5, so the diver is now at -5 metres. Swimming up means adding a positive number to the negative depth. -19 results from subtracting instead of adding. 5 is correct in magnitude but has the wrong sign — the diver is still below the surface.
Question 2 — Medium
Determine the area of a parallelogram with a base of 11 cm and a height of 4 cm.
Answer: The area of a parallelogram is base × height = 11 × 4 = 44 cm². Option B (22 cm²) is the error of halving the product as if using the triangle formula. Option C (30 cm²) results from adding base and height then multiplying by a incorrect factor. Option D (88 cm²) doubles the correct answer, a common error of applying an unnecessary factor of 2.
Question 3 — Hard
A parallelogram-shaped placemat has a base of 30 cm and a height of 12 cm. What is the area of the placemat?
Answer: The area of a parallelogram is base × height = 30 × 12 = 360 cm². Option B (180 cm²) is the error of halving the product, as if using the triangle formula. Option C (84 cm²) comes from adding the dimensions (30 + 12 + 12 + 30). Option D (720 cm²) results from doubling the correct answer.
