Question 1Easy

In a sample of 40 weather observations: 15 sunny, 18 cloudy, 7 rainy. What is P(not cloudy)?

A) 7/40
B) 11/20
C) 9/20
D) 18/40

Answer: Not cloudy = sunny + rainy = 15 + 7 = 22 days. P(not cloudy) = 22/40 = 11/20. Option A (7/40) = P(rainy only). Option C (9/20) = 18/40 ÷ 2 — half of cloudy probability. Option D (18/40) = P(cloudy) — the opposite of what was asked.

Question 2Medium

A school tuck shop in Melbourne sells fruit boxes. The probability that a randomly selected box contains a mango is 0.35, and the probability it contains a banana is 0.45. Assuming no box contains both fruits, what is the probability that a student selects a box containing neither mango nor banana?

A) 0.15
B) 0.20
C) 0.80
D) 0.25

Answer: P(mango or banana) = 0.35 + 0.45 = 0.80. P(neither) = 1 − 0.80 = 0.20.

Question 3Hard

A spinner at the festival has 8 equal sections: 3 red, 2 blue, 2 green, 1 yellow. What is the probability of landing on blue OR green?

A) 1/4
B) 1/2
C) 5/8
D) 3/8

Answer: P(blue or green) = (2 + 2)/8 = 4/8 = 1/2. For mutually exclusive events, add their probabilities. Option A (1/4 = 2/8) is the probability of blue only OR green only — not both. Option C (5/8) is the probability of not red (5 non-red sections out of 8). Option D (3/8) is the probability of red.
